Pure Nirvana
Mike and I are cleaning up the Treaty HQ in preparation for a good old-fashioned party and I have been listening to some of my favorite Nirvana tracks. 15 years after I bought their albums, they still rock. If anything, the music has gotten better with age.
Radio ruined some of their Nevermind singles for me, but every now and then, I go back and revisit my favorite songs: Their album tracks, live songs, deep cuts, demos, b-sides, covers and early stuff. It’s all so good and to my ears, it still sounds just as exciting and relevant today as it has ever sounded. If any band today came out with Been A Son, Even In His Youth or Sappy/Verse Chorus Verse, they would have an instant hit, classic song on their hands.
The songs are just so simple, economical and beautiful, with the scale sometimes tipping a little in favor of weirdness, noise and aggression. Just listen to the raw power behind Scentless Apprentice, Breed, and Aneurysm. Then, listen to the stark beauty of songs like Polly or Dumb. Sometimes, on a busy Saturday afternoon, there is nothing better than a combination of the two. To this day I am still amazed at what an impact a band with three studio albums and a handful of b-sides and live albums has made on me and my music.
Enjoy your Saturday!
